EATING

Salta has plenty of eating places to suit all pockets, ranging from simple snack bars where you can savour the city’s famous empanadas to a growing number of classy restaurants where people dress smartly for dinner. The most traditional cafés huddle around Plaza 9 de Julio, while the city market (Mercado Central) at Florida and San Martín has a number of stalls selling snacks at super-cheap prices.

CENTRAL SALTA

El Charrúa Caseros 221 0387 432 2222; map. Best wood-fired parrilla in town, with most steaks priced around $400, but also a decent fish menu ($250–350). Daily 11.30am–4pm & 7.30pm–1am.

La Criollita Zuviría 306 0387 431 7342; map. Local restaurant best known for its empanadas and Andean-themed dining room. Try the excellent spicy meat empanadas, larger tamales and humitas, plus the more substantial locro, chicken soup and steaks. Daily noon–3.30pm & 8pm–midnight.

Heladería Rosmari Pueyrredón 202 0387 431 3774, rosmariartesanal.com.ar; map. Best ice cream in the city. Flavours range from crema de coco to Ferrero Rocher, tiramisu and crema de portuguesa (thick and creamy nougat custard). Daily 11am–11pm.

Ma Cuisine España 83 0387 421 4378; map. Justly considered the best gourmet experience in town, this small, French-inspired restaurant serves perfectly grilled steaks but also vegetarian tagliatelle, grilled fish and a range of well-constructed pasta dishes. Reservations required (cash only). Mon–Sat 8pm–midnight.

El Solar del Convento Caseros 444 0387 421 5124; map. Elegant surroundings and classical music set the tone for this high-class but not so expensive restaurant, serving juicy steaks and with an excellent wine list. The patio area in front is also good for coffee and pastries. Daily 11.30am–3pm & 8pm–midnight.

Van Gogh España 502 (Plaza 9 de Julio) 0387 431 4659; map. The best coffee in town, excellent cakes, quick meals, appetizing snacks and the location are the attractions here, plus live music late at weekends. The bar looks a bit tired now compared to some other spots nearby, but it does serve food all day. Daily 6am–3am.

OUT OF THE CENTRE

José Balcarce Necochea 594, at Mitre 0387 421 1628; map. José López presides over the “Andean Fusion” kitchen at this charming, Neocolonial corner restaurant and uses regional products such as quinoa and grain amaranth (another Andean cereal) to accompany llama; also try llama carpaccio or, for the less adventurous, the steak and roast potatoes. Cash only. Mon–Sat noon–3pm & 8pm–midnight.
